We usually experience a cold enough winter in our area to kill off one of the most dangerous mosquito species in the US, the Aedes Aegypti or the yellow fever mosquito. While they have been reported here, they aren’t able to really establish a population due to our cold winters. This year, we didn’t experience that harsh winter we are used to. This winter was the warmest recorded winter since 1895. Because we had such a warm winter, studies are showing that there is a higher likelihood that we will see more of this dangerous mosquito this summer. Mosquito Disease Danger Days

Did you know that there are days where the climate reaches a certain temperature, and you are more likely to contract a disease carried by mosquitoes? It’s true. Anytime that the climate is between 61 degrees and 93 degrees Fahrenheit, you are at a larger risk. In 2017, there were seven more disease danger days than normal, and this year there has been estimated even more than that. The more of these warm days we see, the higher the risk of this mosquito making its way into our community.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito is Already Here

The climate has already warmed enough that the Asian Tiger mosquito is already here and thriving. This mosquito is the carrier of the Zika virus which can bring on a list of dangerous health problems as well as birth defects. This mosquito is here because of the climate change we are experiencing.

Brace for Mosquito Season Early

Mosquito season is starting earlier this year and will also last longer. You can count on a week earlier and a week later on both ends from April to November.
