What Attracts Brown Recluse Spiders to Your Absecon, NJ House & How to Repel Arachnids

For New Jersey residents, brown recluse spiders are considered a rare sight as they are not native to the state. When brown recluse spiders are discovered, many homeowners may not identify them correctly or recognize the danger they pose. Brown recluse spiders are one of the more venomous spiders found in North America and can cause serious harm or death if not treated. Ross Environmental Solutions will share what attracts these spiders to South New Jersey homes and how to identify and react when one is found.

Brown Recluse Identification

Brown recluse spiders are not a native species to the state. However, they are still found inside homes from time to time. As they are not native, most residents have a hard time identifying them as a proper threat. Brown recluse spider bites area venomous. However reaction can vary from minor to severe, including death. Each person’s reactions to the bite can differ. Some people may only have red marks, while others will develop blister to lesions. Some people can have a major reaction to their bites and suffer stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and even death.

How Do Brown Recluse Spiders Get in Your Home?

Brown recluse spiders are considered a threat, but they usually only bite when provoked. They love hiding in boxes and packages which is how they travel across the world and find their way into New Jersey homes. Brown recluse spiders can be found in the grocery store, hiding in produce or in clothing to name a few. When moving from state to state, or having a guest visit you from other areas where the spiders naturally live, the spider can be brought right into your home.

What Do Brown Recluse Spiders Look Like?

Luckily, most people shy away from spiders which helps keep encounters and bites to a minimum. However, it is important to be able to identify a brown recluse spider if one happens to wander or is transported into your home. Brown recluse spiders range from 1 to 2 inches which includes their leg span. They are usually brown to a light tan in color. The abdomen varies from male to female. Males have a small thin oval shape, while the female has a bigger robust oval shaped abdomen.  The cephalothorax, the part the head and legs are connected to, is large and round and on it is a violin shape like marking. The violin marking is a unique trait of most recluse spider species. You can also see the pedipalps (or pincers).

Spider Control

If a brown recluse spider is found in the home, the homeowner should keep their distance. Using a vacuum cleaner hose and extenders can give plenty of space between you and the spider and allows you to remove them safely. Even though brown recluse spiders are not native to New Jersey they can still be found inside homes and in yards. They are capable of surviving cold winters too. They will hibernate during the winter but will remain active if they can find food.
