How Do You Tell if Carpenter Bees are in Your House or Yard in Hammonton, NJ? Buzzing Noise, Wood Damage & More

Any stinging insect problem is a big issue for any homeowner. When you find nests and see stinging insects buzzing around your home, you want to find out where they are living so that you can get rid of them or relocate them away from your home. While carpenter bees aren’t nearly as aggressive as some other stinging insects such as yellow jackets and paper wasps, you still don’t want them on your property as they can be damaging to wood and destructive to property. Ross Environmental Solutions is here to talk about carpenter bees and share some signs that you have a carpenter bee problem.

How Do I Identify a Carpenter Bee?

Before you can know that you have a carpenter bee problem, you first have to know how to find them and identify them. One of the biggest differences between regular bees and carpenter bees is the fact that carpenter bees don’t have yellow and black stripes. Their abdomens are all black and have very little hair. Male carpenter bees don’t have stingers and don’t pose a threat that way. However, females do. They will only sting when they feel their nest is threatened though.

How Do You Know if You have Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees aren’t a social insect like other bee species. They don’t live in colonies and will build individual nests. However, when they are left to their devices they can cause damage to your home since they burrow in wood to create tunnels. Following are some signs that you have a carpenter bee problem.
– Seeing Carpenter Bees: If you see them buzzing around your home, you know that you have a problem. If they haven’t found somewhere to burrow in to build their nest yet, they are on the hunt for the perfect place. They are going to be particularly attracted to raw wood.
– Buzzing: As these bees bore holes into wood to create tunnels, you can actually hear them buzzing. If you can hear buzzing inside your walls, you need to call on a pest control specialist for help because you have carpenter bees boring into your walls.
– Sawdust Piles: When these bees drill their way through wood, they will leave behind little piles of sawdust. You may notice it around window and door frames or other surfaces close to their tunnels.
– Smooth Holes in Wood: If you have a carpenter bee problem, you will notice nearly perfectly round, smooth holes in the wood. They will need to be large enough for the bee to fit through. You will notice that these holes look quite different than other wood destroying insects.
– Structural Damage: If the bees are left to their devices, you will eventually have structural damage that can be expensive to fix. If you notice warping or hollow wood that has holes in it, you probably have a carpenter bee problem.
