An average yellow jacket nest can have up to 4,000 yellow jacketsliving in it at any given time. These yellow and black headed insects buildtheir nests pretty much wherever humans are. They build them under eaves, inattics and even underground. If they are in an area where they are easily seen, you can usually see the cone structure of the nest because they are open. Ifyou find you see yellow jackets and can’t find their nest, it is important thatyou remember they can venture hundreds of feet away from their nest on anygiven day.

These hornets have a black head and white face. While theylive in smaller colonies than yellow jackets, they can still have up to 400hornets living in one nest. Unlike yellow jackets, their nests are completelyenclosed. They are also very large. The nests can be up to 14 inches around and24 inches long. They are usually found in landscaping trees and shrubs as wellas on overhangs and in sheds. They are aerial nests though, so you won’t findthem on the ground anywhere like other stinging pests.

The mud dauber is a wasp that doesn’t live in a colony. Theyare total loners. While there may be more than one mud dauber living near oneanother, they don’t rely on each other for everything like those that live in acolony. Just like the name suggests, mud daubers build their nests out of mud. They are usually found in sheltered places like under eaves and will look likeshort or long tubes that are constructed right next to each other.

Paper Wasp Nest

Paper wasps get their name from the paper-like nests theymake. They live in colonies that are pretty small and build nests that hangfrom trees and other structures. The shape of their nest is what sets themapart as they are an umbrella shape.
