Signs of an Oriental Cockroach Infestation in My Cherry Hill, NJ House & How to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a sturdy pest that invade homes year round and spread dangerous diseases and viruses. One common cockroach species found in New Jersey homes is the Oriental cockroach which often enters homes through pipes and drainage systems. Ross Environmental Solutions will share more about Oriental cockroaches as well as signs of an infestation.

What Do Oriental Cockroaches Look Like?

Oriental cockroaches are believed to have originated in Africa, even though the name may suggest more of an Asian origin. Oriental cockroaches are a large species. They can reach one inch in length with females being 1 and ¼ of an inch long. Adult Oriental cockroaches are black and shiny. The males have short stubby wings that only cover half of the abdomen. Their black shiny skin gave them the nick name the water bug. Not only do they resemble some species of water bugs, but Oriental cockroaches thrive in wet environments.

How Do Oriental Cockroaches Get in Homes?

Oriental cockroaches are most often seen in sewer drains, inside basements and places that are damp and dark. Because many Oriental cockroaches can be seen crawling in sewer lines they can pick up diseases and spread them wherever they go. Oriental cockroaches will sometimes craw up and out of drains such as sinks and bath tub drains or they will squeeze through small gaps under doors, windows and even the cracks through the foundation of homes.

Signs of an Oriental Cockroach Infestation

When Oriental cockroaches invade they tend to stay in dark damp areas and often make their presence known. Sightings of Oriental cockroaches are often a good indicator that you probably have more hiding somewhere near or inside your home. You may first see them outside in your yard. When seen outside you know it’s time to begin pest control and exclusion. Other signs of an infestation are the sight of Oriental cockroach egg capsules. Cockroaches lay an egg capsule which contains their eggs. Oriental cockroaches can have 16 eggs in a single capsule. Oriental egg capsule are dark brown or a dark reddish brown color that is about 3/8 of an inch in length. Another major sign that you have an infestation is a musty odor. A major infestation will emit a musty odor from cockroach secretions.

How to Prevent & Get Rid of Oriental Cockroaches

When you have a major cockroach problem either outside your home or inside your home, you will want to begin taking control of the situation. In keeping with Oriental cockroach behavior, you will first want to cover all of the drains in your home. Get sink or drain screens to help stop Oriental cockroaches from entering through the plumbing system. Next make sure they can’t enter your home through the doors, windows, or cracks in the foundation. Window screens should be secured in place and in working order. Make sure exterior doors are properly sealed when closed. Often the weather stripping needs to be replaced over time which is essential to keeping pests out. For additional protection, contact a quality pest control service. Have them come and apply insecticides, traps and baits as needed to control cockroaches.
