Spring Exterior Home Maintenance Tips & Tricks for New Homeowners & Others in Absecon, NJ

Spring is a season of renewal and awakening. Vegetation is greening, animals are arousing from hibernation, and the children’s internal battery seems to be fully charged. Spring has a tendency to inspire us to improve the household with spring cleaning and home improvements. Spring is a busy season for many. In an effort to ease your hectic schedule, Ross Environmental Solutions have compiled a list of some home improvements in an effort to inspire you.

Spring Home Maintenance Tips & Tricks

1) Roof Inspection. The roof has taken a beating over the long winter. Check for damaged shingles that looked cracked, torn, curled, buckled, or loose, depending on the material used. If there is missing granules or other signs of deterioration, replace the shingles that are in need. Inspect the flashing around plumbing vents, skylights, and chimneys. If anything looks out of place; contact a professional for a roof inspection.
2) Gutter Cleaning. Gutters and downspouts need to be cleaned before assessing the condition. After you have thoroughly removed the dirt and debris and feel confident everything is running smoothly, check for signs of damage. This includes rust, leaks, crinkles, and other issues that might impede your gutters performance.
3) Chimney Care. If you have a chimney, check the exterior for signs of decay and make the repairs before the spring rain storms move in. Ensure the flue is cleaned and inspected by a professional.
4) Doors & Windows Maintenance. Inspect the doors and windows. While they are shut, feel for a breeze or look and see if any light shines through. If so, weather stripping needs to be replaced. Now is a good time to clean or replace screens.
5) Outdoor Faucet Operation. Assess the outdoor faucets and hose for damage. Ensure the spout is working efficiently and there are no leaks.
6) Caring for Concrete. Check the concrete slab for cracks, movement, and other damage; especially around pool decks and driveways. Any minor cracks in the concrete can be filled with a filler or silicone caulk. Hit the concrete with a good power wash.
7) Check Exterior Paint. Peeled or chipped paint should be scraped and sanded. Minor repair and touch-ups can be done easily enough following a power washing to remove the dirt and debris. If your home is in need of a complete exterior paint job, a professional can make quick work of it and ensure crisp coverage.
8) Stack Firewood & Remove Clutter. Firewood should be moved away from the home and stored at least 18” off the ground in an organized fashion. It will help minimize the pests that come into your home. Yard clippings should be properly disposed of and any other debris that clutters the house removed.
9) Deck Repair. Spring time is an excellent time to get your deck maintained and cleaned. Repair any boards, clean off the dirt and debris, replace loose or fallen screws, sand, power wash, dry, and refinish.
10) Inspect Exterior Light Fixtures. Porch lights, safe lighting, landscape lights, and pool lights should be inspected and replaced or repaired as needed. If necessary, solicit a professional to assist you with the electrical work.
