When they come for the corn syrup, they will also get a dose of borax and take it back and poison the whole colony. This is a good long term tool in killing ants. If you have apple cider vinegar around your home, it can be a great option for killing and controlling a fruit fly population. They are very attracted to apple cider vinegar and as they swoop in for a drink, they end up drowning themselves.
