How to Get Rid of Mold Growth on the Drywall Walls, Ceilings, Basement & More in Marlton, NJ

There are many areas of the home that can develop mold and where mold poses a health problem to all household members; it shouldn’t ever be left unattended. The most common place to find mold growing inside your home is on your walls and ceilings. Because the outer surface of walls is made of sheet rock or drywall, which is an extremely porous material, when exposed to moisture mold has an ideal place to grow. Today Ross Environmental Solutions will share how to identify mold and the different ways you can remove the mold when it is found.

What Conditions Are Best for Mold Growth?

An area where water vapor is present or high levels of both moisture and humidity provides a prime location for mold spores to grow. Areas such as laundry rooms and bathrooms are the most common for areas to develop mold. Sometimes if a water heater leaks or there is a leaky pipe inside the wall or ceiling, these areas come in contact with moisture and begin to develop mold as well. Additionally basements and kitchens will also likely develop mold especially near a dishwashing machine.

Signs of Mold in House

Most signs of mold are usually quite obvious. You may see black or green colored powder on your walls accompanied with yellowish water stains. Some less noticeable signs of mold growth are peeling or cracking paint on the wall. Other signs of mold are discoloration or bulging areas of the wall along with black streaks or even recurring soot like powder. You may even constantly have a musty damp water smell in certain areas of your home.

Homemade Mold Cleaner & Remover

There are two types of mold removers that you can make that work great on removing mold. The first one starts by mixing together 2 tablespoons of Borax, ¼ cup of white vinegar, with 2 cups of very warm water. Pour the mixture into a spray to apply the solution onto the mold. The second method uses ¼ cup of bleach with 2 cups of warm water into a spray bottle for easier application.

How to Get Rid of Mold in Basement & Other Rooms

The key in removing mold is time. Whatever the cleaning solution you choose, you must allow the solution to set on the mold for some time. Allow your mold killing solution to stay on the wall for 15 to 30 minutes. You want to give the mixture time to soak into the drywall and kill the mold. With a clean damp cloth, wipe the cleaner from off your wall. You may need to use a scrub brush for heavier areas with mold. If there is still mold present then re-apply the mixture onto the wall and use a scrub brush to help reach deep into the pores of the wall. Afterwards, once again with a damp cloth, wipe the wall down. This mold removing method will work on both painted drywall and unpainted drywall as well. However if the wall hasn’t been painted, you may want to help prevent future mold from accumulating again by sealing the wall with a primer.
