Hacklemesh AKA Black Lace Weaver Spider VS Brown Recluse in Gloucester County, NJ; Identification, Habitat, Prevention & Control

Spiders are one of the many types of pests that people work so hard to keep out of their homes. Where most spiders keep to themselves, there are some who like to wander and gain access to our residences. There are many spiders that carry harmful venom and others that are just plain creepy. One of these species of spider that normally keep to the outdoors, but do occasionally find their way inside our homes is the Hacklemesh Weaver Spider. Also known as the Black Lace Weaver Spider. Ross Environmental Solutions will share some of the identifying features and habits of the hacklemesh weaver spider as well as how you can prevent them from wandering into your home.

Hacklemesh Weaver Spider Identification

Hacklemesh weaver spiders are robust looking spiders that can reach up to ½ inch in length with the females growing even larger; and this is not including their legs. The leg length varies between the males and the females with the male’s legs typically longer. The cephalothoraxes or head of the Hacklemesh weaver spider is pear shaped and they have an oval shaped abdomen with a unique pattern on it. The coloring of the hacklemesh weaver spider can vary. However they are usually dark brown to black or even a lighter tan color. The pattern on the abdomen is lighter than the rest of their body. Their body and legs are covered in tiny hairs.

Where Do Hacklemesh Weaver Spiders Live?

The hacklemesh weaver spider is believed to originate in northern Europe and was brought to the U.S. where they are now widespread through eastern parts of the United States. They like to live near homes in rocks, leaves, and other yard debris. Come spring time, the males will begin to roam looking for a mate. This is when hacklemesh weaver spider activity is most noticed by people. Don’t be fooled though, the hacklemesh weaver spider is active all year around. They will often roam inside homes during the spring and scare the dickens out of many of those who come across them. Where the hacklemesh weaver spiders do have venom they are not fatal towards people. However they do have a mean bite which can hurt for days. The hacklemesh weaver spider prefers to live in dark humid places so when they do venture indoors, they are most often found in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.

Hacklemesh Weaver Spider VS Brown Recluse

Hacklemesh weaver spiders are sometimes mistaken for highly venomous brown recluse spiders however hacklemesh weavers lack the telltale dark violin shaped mark. Brown recluse spiders also have six eyes, whereas the hacklemesh weaver, like most spiders has eight eyes. But honestly, it’s not a good idea to get close enough to count the eyes. If you even suspect you may be dealing with a brown recluse, it’s best to call a professional pest control company right away as a bite can result in necrosis and result in deep scarring!

Hacklemesh Weaver Spider Control & Prevention

Controlling or preventing a hacklemesh weaver spider intrusion into your home involves two steps: exclusion and insecticides. You will want to seal any cracks or holes that the hacklemesh weaver spider can crawl through. Then you will want to have your home regularly sprayed with insecticides by a professional exterminator who has access to professional grade poison. Keeping your yard regularly manicured and free of debris also helps keep the hacklemesh weaver spider as well as many other pests away from your home.
